Mingus Plays Piano originally was released on the heels of The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady, a brilliantly orchestrated, album length composition performed by an eleven piece band of frequent Mingus collaborators. The Black Saint was a career highlight, but the year leading up to that success was a tumultuous one. In 1962, Mingus toured heavily, and for his band’s residencies in NYC, he experimented with hiring a bassist and playing piano himself. He agreed to record a live album with a big band iteration of his Jazz Workshop for United Artists.
Mingus Plays Piano, released just a few months after his masterpiece the Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, is the only record to feature Mingus performing on his instrument of choice for composing. From the opening track, appropriately titled. Limited vinyl LP repressing of this 1963 album by the jazz great. Bassist/composer Charles Mingus is one of the most radical figures in American music. While Mingus received many honors posthumously as well as during his career, perhaps his greatest achievement was transcending the restrictive label of jazz. Mingus Plays Piano, released just a few months after his masterpiece the Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, is the only record to feature Mingus performing on his instrument of choice for composing.
Mingus played piano and did his vocal thing on the final cut. Unfortunately, nothing form Mingus at Antibes is included here, but as a consolation, there are excellent liner notes by Neil Tesser, author of the Playboy Guide to Jazz. This is a decent, even fine introduction to some of the best recordings by Mingus before his jump to Columbia, and can be had for a nominal price tag by the curious.
