Curtis Mayfield - Super Fly flac album

Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the Blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, "Freddie's Dead" (number 2 R&B charts, number 4 Pop charts) and the title track (number 5 R&B, number 8 Pop)

sounds very good, but the cover artwork is cheaply reconstructed. the "super fly" logo including the lady and the dude with the gun is pixelated, not cut out very well and looks like it was taken from a smaller digital photo source. anyhow it's a great gatefold bundle, thick vinyl with a clean sound.

The choice of Curtis Mayfield to score the blaxploitation film Super Fly was an inspired one. No other artist in popular music knew so well, and expressed through his music so naturally, the shades of gray inherent in contemporary inner-city life

Unlike the common soundtrack, Superfly is a concept album known for its anti-drug and self-liberation themes, unlike the film, Mayfield holds a position far more critical, with socially aware lyrics about crime, poverty and drug abuse. However, the album lyric content doesn't distance itself from the film. The album starts with Little Child Runnin' Wild, a soul song about loneliness and drug addiction, the highlight in this one is its rich orchestration of violins and woodwind instruments. Being one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied, it surely demonstrates that Curtis Mayfield was a talented singer and songwriter.

The success of an album like Super Fly goes against all conventional wisdom. Nothing this raw, this ghetto, this funky, soulful, and political is supposed to sell five million copies. At least, to my understanding, nothing before the dawn of hip-hop, and even then you had to sacrifice some of those elements for commercial success. According to the Curtis Mayfield biography, Traveling Soul, co-written by his son Todd Mayfield and Travis Atria, around the time of Super Fly’s success, Curtis was abusive toward the woman he lived with, identified only as Toni, and referred as his spiritual wife. Todd writes: On vacation in Nassau in October, right around Super Fly’s ascendance to the top of the pops, he and Toni got into a late-night argument as Tracy, Sharon, and I slept in another room.
