Randy Burns' voice, at its best, sounds like a young, expressive Pete Seeger, and on this album (reissued on CD in the late 1990s) the comparison is doubly apt, consisting as it does of anti-war songs, old Civil War tunes, and love ballads.

Randy Burns is a minor figure on the Greenwich Village '60s folk scene, but his albums are largely enjoyable examples of post-Dylan psychedelic folk; the first three have the added collector value of being on the legendary New York indie ESP-Disk although they're not as interesting as, say, Pearls Before Swine. Burns only plays three originals (all quite good), with the rest of the album consisting of scene standards by folks like Eric Anderson and David Blue, with a haunting version of Irene Paul's haunting 1940s anti-war ballad Mr. War the highlight. The Village folk scene petered out during the summer of love, and like many of the New York folkies of the time, Burns became intrigued by the possibilities of psychedelic rock. Briefly returning home to New Haven, Burns hooked up with a local psych-pop band called the Morning.

Songs of Love and Hate is the third studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Produced by Bob Johnston, the album was released on March 19, 1971, through Columbia Records. Cohen reunited with producer Bob Johnston, who was at the helm for the singer's previous album Songs From a Room, and also brought back guitarist Ron Cornelius, who acted as leader of Cohen's new crew of backing musicians, christened The Army.

Three albums by Randy Burns were originally released on the ESP-Disk label during the late '60s. The first called of Love And War came out in 1966 and was somewhat your typical mid-'60s solo folk debut album, straight out of the Greenwich Village scene. It contained a few self-composed tunes but mostly "borrowed" songs from fellow folksters. Accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and occasional 12-string backing, Randy laid down a set that inspired his own writing.
