La Nouvelle Frontière was formed in the late 1960's by the twins, Richard (guitar/vocals) and Marie-Claire (vocals) Séguin, in Montreal's eastern district of Pointe-aux-Trembles. They were joined by André Brault (bass/guitar/vocals), Denis Chenier (drums), Robert Letendre (guitar/vocals), and Normand Théroux (keyboards/vocals). They released two albums in 1970, a self-titled effort followed by "L'Hymne aux quenouilles". The music has a strong 1960's folk-rock feel to it, with only a couple of mildly experimental tracks.

The "Ballade des dames du temps jadis" ("Ballade of Ladies of Time Gone By") is a poem by François Villon that celebrates famous women in history and mythology, and a prominent example of the ubi sunt? genre. It is written in the fixed-form ballade format, and forms part of his collection Le Testament.

The Ballade des pendus, literally "ballad of the hanged", also known as Epitaphe Villon or Frères humains, is the best-known poem by François Villon. It is commonly acknowledged, although not clearly established, that Villon wrote it in prison while he awaited his execution. It was published posthumously in 1489 by Antoine Vérard. The poem is in the form of a large ballade. All lines have 10 syllables. The last line is the same in each stanza.
