Francesco Petrarca, or Petrarch, was born in Arezzo, Italy in 1304. A scholar, poet, diplomat, and early humanist, his rediscovery of the ancient Roman writers did much to fuel the 14th century Renaissance. His use of the sonnet form, particularly in the lyrics dedicated to his ideal love, Laura, was imitated throughout Europe, and became a mark of the civilised literary culture of his own and later periods.

Il Canzoniere, also known as the Rime Sparse (English: Scattered Rhymes), but originally titled Rerum vulgarium fragmenta (English: Fragments of common things, that is Fragments composed in vernacular), is a collection of poems by the Italian humanist, poet, and writer Petrarch.

Part of the problem is establishing a context for Lassus' immense production in terms of French chansons and German lieder. In Il Canzoniere di Messer Francesco Petrarca, Paul van Nevel and the Huelgas Ensemble have found a solution that works in addressing Lassus' vocal music through its poets. In this case the focus is upon one poet in particular, viewed in Lassus' time as a shining light of his age, Francesco Petrarch. These settings are drawn from all phases of Lassus' career, ranging from his first collection of madrigals in 1555 to his last in 1593
