Louis Armstrong (1901–1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in jazz and in all of American popular music. His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz.

That work began appearing in the '30s, after Armstrong had spent time in Hollywood and Europe (not just New Orleans, Chicago, and New York), when he had become a fixture on the popular scene and begun leading a big band on the roughly 150 sides he recorded for Decca between 1935 and 1946. He had already proven himself during innumerable cutting contests, and he had staked out the ground later occupied by nearly every jazz soloist to appear over the next 30 years.
