Lara's Theme" is the name given to a leitmotif written for the film Doctor Zhivago (1965) by composer Maurice Jarre. Soon afterward, the leitmotif became the basis of the song "Somewhere, My Love". In 1967, "Somewhere, My Love" won Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Chorus, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. It lost to "Michelle" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney of The Beatles.

Doctor Zhivago is a lively and vibrant work from the brilliant young French composer Maurice Jarre. Already heralded for his acclaimed scores in the films The Longest Day, The Collector, and Lawrence of Arabia, Jarre put together a bold and expressive score in spirited fashion. The music for Doctor Zhivago includes Russian folk tunes, bits from Soviet marches, songs, ballads, and dances. Featured in this work is the lovely and haunting "Lara's Theme," as well as themes noting the violence and terror of the revolution.

With a career than spans close to 50 years, and nearing twice that many in the number of films scored, Maurice Jarre is one of the more deserving composers of a compilation album. Being a native Frenchman does immediately brand him with a slightly stereotypical musical sensibility, of which has been displayed many times over in his career.
