Johannes Brahms (German: ; 7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria.

Johannes Brahms was one of the romantic period's most conflicted musical characters, and his symphonies are the perfect way to find out wh. .The image of Brahms the curmudgeon with his hands firmly behind his back is how most people see this most quietly influential of composers. But particularly in his symphonies, this image is proven to be a complete myth. Few symphonic composers have done so much with so few works, but Brahms four symphonies have lasted through the centuries thanks to their verve, their freedom and their complexity.

Brahms however chose the stricter conventions of the classical period, and as a result received much criticism from his more adventurous peers and later composers. Yet Brahms demonstrated time and again that it wasn't necessary to abandon the old forms in forwarding the ideals of Romanticism. Compared to many musicians and composers, Brahms was a late developer  .

Johannes Brahms' noble, traditional music matches his stubborn but kind-hearted personality. Johannes Brahms's music conforms to Classical-era standards of form and structure. His enemies said that this made him conservative and boring - an old-fashioned writer of complicated music. But his fans disagreed! They saw him as keeping the old traditions alive with integrity. The two camps had a "war" (that's what they called it!) which divided all of musical society in Europe. Personally, I'm quite fond of Brahms's music.

Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams, Barber, Martinu, Faure, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Harris, Roussel, Shostakovich, Britten. There are dozens more but these are the ones I listen to the most. Listen to my music on SoundCloud Watch a performance of my chamber piece Virga Watch a performance of my Suite for Piano. It would be a fair challenge for me to select a composer, or even a set of favourite composers, to call my favourite. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Part, Schubert, Mahler, Faure, and Brahms are some of them that come to mind. Jan-11-2011, 21:57 #64.
