Only for completionists (1%). Originally only thought to exist "The Lost Trident Sessions" represent the 3rd masterpiece album which unfortunately was lost and hidden in the Columbia Records vaults for over 25 years. Bootleggers had inferior sounding copies in circulation floating about costing loads of money and being hailed as Jazz's holy grail.

Although McLaughlin had been the only composer on the first two Mahavishnu albums, he penned only three of the six tracks here, with Hammer writing two and Laird pitching in one. It's fiery, if perhaps over-busy at times, fusion, McLaughlin reaching his most feverish pitches in the frenetic concluding passage of the ten-minute "Trilogy. The numbers written by other members than McLaughlin tend to be a little more subdued, and perhaps unsurprisingly less inclined toward burning guitar solos.

Mahavishnu is an album by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, released in 1984 by Warner Bros. During the 1980s, John McLaughlin reformed the Mahavishnu Orchestra for release of the two albums Mahavishnu and Adventures in Radioland. This band's overall sound was radically different from the original Mahavishnu Orchestra, in particular because of McLaughlin's extensive use of the Synclavier synthesiser system. This album features original Mahavishnu Orchestra drummer Billy Cobham.

The Lost Trident Sessions is a studio album by jazz fusion group the Mahavishnu Orchestra, released on 21 September 1999 through Sony Music Entertainment. It was originally recorded in June 1973 at Trident Studios but was not released until 26 years later.

The Lost Trident Sessions is the much-heralded studio album that never was - the follow-up to 1971’s The Inner Mounting Flame and 1972’s Birds of Fire. The group shelved the Trident tapes, opting instead to release a live album called Between Nothingness and Eternity (BNE), which contained some of the same tunes. But neither the live album nor this newly discovered session hold a candle to those first two studio classics. Sure, the playing is burning, but compositionally you can hear the band beginning to run out of ideas. Dream" kicks off the Trident sessions.

The Lost Trident Sessions find the Mahavishnu Orchestra at what could have been a turning point in their career. The band always showed a rockier side to them, especially McLaughlin playing distorted electric guitar, but The Lost Trident Sessions shows a complete abandonment of their jazz influences. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Since each member of this band is excellent at their instrument, whatever they do will surely be nothing short of excellent. McLaughlin slowly becomes the center of most of their music, showing his ego growing larger and larger. Mahavishnu Orchestra with the genius & "virtuose guitarist" John McLaughlin in command is a remarkable exploratory fusion jazz band. MrGumby May 8th 2014.

The Lost Trident Sessions. The Lost Trident Sessions. Exactly what the album title says. These are songs by the original Mahavishnu Orchestra that did not show up on either THE INNER MOUNTING FLAME or BIRDS OF FIRE. For me, each subsequent album by the original group is a step down from the previous, but ever so slight. Talented musicians all, TRIDENT is worth hearing minimally for John McLaughlin's guitar pyrotechnics. His direction and the group's focus would soon change quite radically from this 1970-1973 iteration. Nice photos in the booklet and a solid essay by Bill Minkowski too.
