Theirs was a "unique four-person democracy that in practice maximalized the talents and insights of four people rather than just one leader calling the shots," writes . Records co-founder Jay Boberg in the liners for this new 2xCD reissue of Murmur, the band's first and best full-length. There's a historical component to Murmur that often gets lost: In 1983, . No bands were combining these particular influences in this particular way, which made this debut sound not only new but even subversive: a sharp reimagining of rock tropes.

Reckoning is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band . released on April 9, 1984 by . Produced by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, the album was recorded at Reflection Sound Studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, over 16 days in December 1983 and January 1984. Dixon and Easter intended to capture the sound of . s live performances, and used binaural recording on several tracks.

Murmur is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band . released on April 12, 1983 by . Murmur drew critical acclaim upon its release for its unusual sound, defined by lead singer Michael Stipe's cryptic lyrics, guitarist Peter Buck's jangly guitar style, and bass guitarist Mike Mills' melodic basslines. Since its release, Murmur has featured heavily in various "must have" lists compiled by the music media. In 1989, it was rated number eight on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s. In 2003, the TV network VH1 named Murmur the 92nd greatest album of all time. Some of the more prominent of these lists to feature Murmur are shown below; this information is adapted from acclaimedmusic.

s first album 'Murmur', released in 1983, remains one of the most compelling and otherworldly debut albums in rock history. In December 1987, North America’s most prestigious rock publication, Rolling Stone, granted . the front cover and proclaimed them to be America’s Best Rock & Roll Band. Just four and a half years after the release of their debut album, Murmur, the band’s dynamic fifth album, Document, had zoomed up to N. 0 on the Billboard 200. Within another five years, they would be one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Murmur was a work of studied ingenuousness, which is to say that . went to considerable pains to present themselves and their music as ineffable, ethereal, elemental. This was an album that appeared utterly unconcerned about whether you loved it or not. Talk about R.E.M. - Murmur

GoodBuyMyFriends
What makes you think this is remastered? Never says that anywhere! Was it on a hype sticker or something??
Hellmaster
This reissue sounds very good. Not the quietest pressing unfortunately, even after cleaning it. But no real loud defects just low level crispyness. Which shows up between tracks. At least it was flat! I still don't know why we can't get a clean, noise free pressing in 2019!? Mastered at Sterling in the dead grooves. It is warmer than other versions but I prefer it. I did adjust the sub a notch down to tame the lows. It seems better balanced with that tweak on my system. More punch in the bass. Chimes, guitars, vocals and other details are all clear in the mix. Overall, I am happy with the purchase as originals are getting harder to find that are clean.
Celen
I'm not able to do an A/B comparison on two TTs at once, but I do have this and a 1983 1st pressing and played them alternately. This sounds basically the same to me, FWIW. I'm not sure this is actually remastered (there's no remastering credit on it), just a repress by Back To Black. It seems to be a good one though, nice heavy vinyl, maybe more than 180g, with the old silver I.R.S. label reproduced, printed inner sleeve, etc. If you don't have the wherewithal to hunt down a 1st press, this will be a good alternative.
Adrierdin
It is remastered. If you look in the deadwax, this was cut by Ray Janos at Sterling. When you cut a lacquer, that is a remaster essentially. The original metalwork would be long gone.
Silver Globol
I have this pressing and the original pressing. This one is much better. Can't say about the Mofi one but I am pleased with this.
Efmprof
I think I've solved the great mystery that is this pressing. Looks like it was pressed at United Record Pressing. This place is notorious for complaints on their vinyl. My own copy of this is pretty great besides a large dent (?) on side 2 track 1 that causes several large pops throughout the song. Essentially worthless for that alone. You'd think a lot of these 180g pressings would be more reliable. I'd stick with your original pressing if you already own one.
Dorilune
To me, this sounds amazing. I thought the CD remaster was one of the best remasters I'd ever heard, and the vinyl carries that, along with being a quiet pressing with nice dynamics. I will admit to being quite fond of the thick, bassy sound of this, so I can understand how others might not feel it.
Frdi
I think I'll spring for this one based on your review. My OG-press is totally flat and lifeless sounding. Bass is what it needs. Sounds like this pressing is just the ticket!
Gholbirius
I love this album with all my being but holy moly this pressing is a disaster. Warped and scratched upon opening with fingerprints and dirt all over the wax - way too heavy on the lows and mids and not enough on the highs. Some of Peter's beautiful higher register guitar hooks are barely audible due to the horrid mixing on this press. An original CD issue sounds better than this!
Acebiolane
How's this compare to an original pressing? Was thinking of perhaps picking up a copy, my copy from 1983 has seen better days.
Vojar
I just listened to my copy for the first time and I have to say I'm not impressed. I don't own an OG copy but this one sounds way too heavy on the bass and mids and sounds overcompressed in general. My Capitol reissue of Document sounds better than this, which is saying something.
Zahisan
I feel the same, my original pressing from 1984 is VG at this point!
