Those Prison Blues is an album by blues musician Robert Pete Williams recorded by Harry Oster in Louisiana State Penitentiary in 1959 and 1960 and originally released on the Folk-Lyric label before being reissued with an altered track listing on Arhoolie in 1971.

It is an interesting type of blindfold test to play these recordings of this artist that were made when he was in prison serving a life sentence for murder, then compare them with tracks he cut after being released, supposedly for his great abilities as a blues improviser.

Robert Pete Williams (March 14, 1914 – December 31, 1980) was an American Louisiana blues musician. His music characteristically employed unconventional blues tunings and structures, and his songs are often about the time he served in prison.

Folsom Prison Blues" is a song written in 1953 and first recorded in 1955 by American singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. The song combines elements from two popular folk styles, the train song and the prison song, both of which Cash continued to use for the rest of his career. It was one of Cash's signature songs. It was the eleventh track on his debut album With His Hot and Blue Guitar and it was also included (same version) on All Aboard the Blue Train.

Discovered in the Louisiana State Penitentiary, Robert Pete Williams became one of the great blues discoveries during the folk boom of the early ’60s. His disregard for conventional patterns, tunings, and structures kept him from a wider audience, but his music remains one of the great, intense treats of the blues. While he was a child, he worked the fields with his family; he never attended school. Williams didn’t begin playing.

One of the very best country blues field recordings to ever see the light of the day. Collection of songs recorded in the Angola penitentiary in Lousiana in the late 50s where Williams was serving his life sentence for mudering a man in a local club. You will rarely find a blues record with as much emotion, melancholy and beauty in it. As real as blues can get...

Cecil Barfield is great, I know him! Got most of his records I guess...

I like the sound of this, thanks for the review. Cecil Barfield is my fave Bluesman, well worth checking out if you've not heard him.
