Given that the T. Rex/Marc Bolan catalog is cluttered with collections, all recycling much of the same material, it's easy to be suspicious of another hits compilation, such as Hip-0's 2002 release 20th Century Boy: The Ultimate Collection, especially if it's billed as an "ultimate" retrospective. Sure, some may complain about a missing single or album track, but this is a stellar, pitch-perfect compilation, balancing the aforementioned big hits with relatively lesser-known gems like "Raw Ramp" and a cover of "Summertime Blues," resulting in the only single-disc compilation to capture all sides of Marc Bolan and T.

Tanx is the forth studio album by English glam rock act T. Rex, their eighth if including the group's earlier incarnation as Tyrannosaurus Rex. released on 16 March 1973 by record label EMI. Tanx was a musical departure from previous works: still containing tracks in the vein of The Slider, Marc Bolan showed his interest for both American soul music and funk. Female backing singers appeared on a few tracks. New instruments such as mellotron were used, allowing the T. Rex sound to evolve.

There are five songs on this album which I think are atrocious. I think this album and all T-rex material could improve if they took there time to make sure everything was right. The overall sound was a mixture of accoustic folk and hard electric guitar rock n' roll with a singer who sounds as if he's in a contest to see if he can be the next Bob Dylan. He isn't successful but by God he sounds just like Dylan if Dylan was a curly haired British Hebrew boy with surreal lyrics that Jethro Tull would not even touch. The guitar work of Marc Bolan was exisquiste but every thing else folded faster than a fat man at a Weight Watchers meeting.
