Barclay James Harvest are an English progressive rock band. They were founded in Oldham, in September 1966 by guitarist/vocalist John Lees (b. 1947), bassist/vocalist Les Holroyd (b. 1948), Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme (1947–2010), and t Mel Pritchard (1948–2004). After signing with EMI's Parlophone label in the UK for one single in early 1968, they moved to the more progressively inclined Harvest label.

Barclay James Harvest's sensibly titled debut album was one of the unsung classics of the late '60s, a post-psychedelic pop album that posits a peculiar collision between the Bee Gees' vision of classic grandeur and the heftier sounds leaking out of the rock underground. This Barclay James Harvest album is pretty good, but the songwriting is probably a bit weaker than some will have you believe. Mother Dear" was influenced by the Moody Blues (you can tell because the lead singer sounds like Justin Hayward) but the songwriting isn't very strong. It's a good hook the tune has going there, but it COULD be even better.
