Be Thankful for What You Got" is a soul song written and first performed by William DeVaughn.

Produced by John Davis. Album Be Thankful for What You Got. Be Thankful for What You Got Lyrics. It was ultimately a one-hit wonder for DeVaughn, who only recorded one album before losing interest in music and returning to his prior job as a draftsman. The song is often mistakenly attributed to Curtis Mayfield, owing to his vocal similarities with DeVaughn, but Mayfield never recorded the song. The song has been extensively sampled, referenced and covered since its release, particularly the famous lines that coined the term gangsta lean.

Be Thankful for What You Got is a studio album issued in 1974 by the soul singer William DeVaughn. It includes the best selling song also titled "Be Thankful for What You Got". All tracks written by William DeVaughn, except where noted. William DeVaughn - vocals, songwriting. Jerry Cohen - clavinet, piano. Norman Harris -guitar. Hugh McDonald - bass. Rusty Jackman - bass.

On stage, William DeVaughn used to almost preach to his audience and furthermore to admonish it. Lyrics and texts are almost biblical influenced and yes, someone can easily get down with some of the greatest moments of smoothness ever waxed on a piece of vinyl. And suddenly in 1980 he released the album Figures Can’t Calculate on TEC, which included the title song, a minor R&B hit and a remake of Be Thankful for What You Got Just for conclusion, let’s hear what Earl Young, the great drummer of MFSB, said once about TSOP: I think that the Philadelphia Sound is so unique, because we were like family, we recorded like family. Everybody knew everybody in the studio, it wasn’t just about making records.

William DeVaughn, a native of Washington, . beat the odds when "Be Thankful for What You Got," scaled the charts and sold a million copies. You see, DeVaughn paid for the session. All artists who signed with Omega Productions paid to record. The title track, with its cool, shuffling beat and Biblical-influenced lyrics, was the summer jam of 1974.
