3rd: Julius Rudel, London Symphony Orchestra 1972. I was the most surprised by this recording. It’s the Beverly Sills recording of the three loves of Hoffmann, and the first recording I really enjoyed of the challenge. The orchestral sound (remastered in 2002) is warm and clean. Talking about Sills, I was more impressed with her pitch-perfect Olympia and her powerful Antonia.
