The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon that occurred during the summer of 1967, when as many as 100,000 people, mostly young people sporting hippie fashions of dress and behavior, converged in San Francisco's neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury. Although hippies also gathered in many other places in the . Canada and Europe, San Francisco was at that time the most publicized location for hippie subculture.
The summer of 1967 was the Summer Of Love for us, George Harrison said. We could feel what was going on with our friends, and people who had similar goals in America. Indeed, one of the most striking elements of the album is how clear and vital it is sonically. Every vocal part, every guitar note, every drum beat and every orchestral sound is a joy throughout. The bass, painstakingly recorded by McCartney and Emerick after the other elements had been completed, dances across the tracks.

An album like the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band would have been unimaginable a couple years earlier. It was also the year in which pop and rock music blossomed into a complete artistic endeavor, with the waves caused by this cultural shift still being felt decades later. There is a huge stack of incredible albums from 1967, more than we've included here; we've gathered a handful of the ones that provided a soundtrack to that key summer. Keep in mind to qualify for our list of the Top Summer of Love Albums, an LP had to be released in the few months leading.
