Van Halen III is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Van Halen, released on March 17, 1998 by Warner Bros. Produced by Mike Post and Eddie Van Halen, it is the band's only studio album to feature Extreme lead vocalist Gary Cherone, and the last to feature bassist Michael Anthony before he was replaced in the band by Eddie's son Wolfgang in 2006. Work on a follow-up album with Cherone commenced in 1999, but never advanced past a few demos.

1984 (stylized as MCMLXXXIV) is the sixth studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released on January 9, 1984. It was the last Van Halen album until A Different Kind of Truth (2012) to feature lead singer David Lee Roth, who left in 1985 following creative differences, and the final full-length album with all four original members. 1984 and Van Halen's debut are Van Halen's bestselling albums, each having sold more than 10 million copies.
The "III" in the title of Van Halen III refers to the unveiling of the third incarnation of Van Halen, the post-Sammy Hagar lineup featuring former Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone as lead singer. According to the party line, Van Halen ditched Sammy because they wanted to try new musical and lyrical approaches that Hagar was reluctant to pursue. And it is true that Van Halen III makes a slight break from his dunderheaded party rock, but that's a difference that only hardcore fans will be able to hear.

Van Halen III is the eleventh studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1998. It is the only Van Halen album to feature Gary Cherone on lead vocals, and is commonly said to be Van Halen's most unpopular album; no songs from it are featured on The Best of Both Worlds, the band's 2004 greatest hits compilation, and the album itself is not even listed on the band's discography.
But when a band takes that chance-the chance to stretch and grow-, many fans don't handle it too well (to put it mildly). I however do, Van Halen 3 just doesn't appeal to me. Cherone's vocals don't do anything for me, they don't have the energy of David Lee Roth. That is exactly what makes VH so good, it's FUN to listen to.
