Otherworldly pop outliers Modern Studies will release their second album Welcome Strangers on 18 May, via Fire Records. Above you can hear their stunning new single 'Mud And Flame', a brilliant and beautiful piece that blends sublime vocals with a sweet and lavish instrumental. The band used a Creative Scotland grant to pay for recording of the new album in a remote village hall, and hired a chamber orchestra for the sessions in rural Perthshire.

Elegiac and haunted, life-giving and triumphant, this beguiling return digs deep into landscapes both real and imagined, internal and external, in a work that might perhaps best be described as kosmiche choral or, if we’re pushing it . Or, put simply, glorious pop music. It is an elemental and often spectral world of contrasting tones and hues that is found within ‘Welcome Strangers’, one whose lyrical vocabulary is of loss, light, air, sun, growth; of spires, seeds and phosphene dreams.

Modern studies is a subject unique to the Scottish secondary school curriculum. The focus of Modern Studies is to develop learners' knowledge and understanding of contemporary political and social issues in local, Scottish, United Kingdom and international contexts.
