Long's biggest hit was "Here Comes the Judge" which in July 1968 reached number four on the R&B charts and number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was inspired by a comic act on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In about a judge by Pigmeat Markham, whose own "Here Comes the Judge" – a similar song with different lyrics –. charted three weeks after Long's, also in July 1968, and reached number 19 on Billboard. Long's 1969 singles included "I Had a Dream" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale"  . 1969: "I Had a Dream"/"Ain't No Justice" (Soul 35054).

The career of Frederick Shorty Long has not been well served in the CD age. Apart from an Essential Collection on the Spectrum label in 2000 (conspicuous for its omission of what many of his fans regard as their favourite track, ‘Chantilly Lace’) his work has appeared only on a number of various artist compilations. Shorty was to have one more single released, before he died in a tragic boating accident on 29 June 1969.

For a Motown artist who had a Top Ten pop hit, Shorty Long has been surprisingly unrepresented by single-artist compilations. He and co-writer Sylvia Moy also strike an uncommonly serious mood on "I Had a Dream," which had too many unpredictable melodic twists to reach the hit parade, but is intriguing for its non-formulaic structure, solemn operatic quality, and lyrical outlook obviously influenced by the legacy of then-recently assassinated Martin Luther King, Jr. This might be a release for Motown fanatics, but for that audience, it's certainly a good one, with annotation just as complete as the track selection.

Frederick Earl "Shorty" Long (May 20, 1940 – June 29, 1969) was an American soul singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer for Motown's Soul Records imprint. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1980. 16. A Whiter Shade of Pale.

Frederick 'Shorty' Long has always had a special place in the affections of all serious Motown collectors, although he recorded less than three dozen tracks in total in his five years with the company. His singles on Motown's Soul label are cherished artifacts of the company's Golden Era and have been for decades now. Unfortunately Shorty died in a boating accident in 1969, just as he was beginning to move into the commercial mainstream. and shortly before his second album was due to be released  . 6.
