Ten of its tunes were taped live at Basin Street in New York, while the other two come from studio sessions and were issued with added echo and applause. Live at Sugar Hill, San Francisco (Mainstream S6091/Time S2104) showcases McRae in another live set, this time backed by her regular trio with Norman Simmons on piano.

Carmen Mercedes McRae (April 8, 1922 – November 10, 1994) was an American jazz singer. She is considered one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century and is remembered for her behind-the-beat phrasing and ironic interpretation of lyrics. McRae was inspired by Billie Holiday, but she established her own voice. She recorded over sixty albums and performed worldwide. 1 Early life and education.
