The Scarlet Plague is a post-apocalyptic fiction novel written by Jack London and originally published in London Magazine in 1912. The story takes place in 2073, sixty years after an uncontrollable epidemic, the Red Death, has depopulated the planet. James Smith is one of the survivors of the era before the scarlet plague hit and is still left alive in the San Francisco area, and he travels with his grandsons Edwin, Hoo-Hoo, and Hare-Lip.

The story opens with a recounting of a plague, the "Red Death"; it has long been devastating the country, and the narrator describes the process of the disease, emphasizing the redness of the blood and the scarlet stains. The contrast of the gaiety within and the ravaging death outside, as described at the beginning of the story, contributes to the overall effect the author is after. The Red Death causes the victim’s death in half an hour and leaves behind a frightful, blood-stained corpse. After half of the kingdom’s residents have died from the plague, Prospero gathers a thousand knights and ladies from his court and locks them and himself up in a private abbey to protect them from the Red Death. The abbey is well furnished with dancers, musicians, entertainers, and wine so that its residents may enjoy themselves while hiding from the plague. Once the last person is in, Prospero bolts the doors shut so that no one else may enter or leave.
