Rhino strikes again - and for those decidedly in the core '70s rock and pop camp, this volume is not to be missed. Sure, it's all been emblazoned upon many a brain, but if you're in need of a handy hits roundup, this is a perfect selection. The variety itself is even to be admired: from America and Fleetwood Mac's eternal electric-piano sunset to Deep Purple and Foghat's vintage Marshall stax boogie, the well-worn territory is always trod with class.

Various artists, The Harder They Come soundtrack (1973) There was a lot more to the early years of reggae than Bob Marley & the Wailers, and the best of the rest is brilliantly summarized on this soundtrack album for one of the best fictional music films ever made. Once they realized they weren’t going to get any Wailers tracks, the filmmakers chose brilliantly. As the charismatic outlaw/singer/star of the movie, Jimmy Cliff sang half the songs, but there’s not a bad cut in the original soundtrack’s dozen.

There’s no more appropriate way to kick this list off than with a record from Brian Eno, an artist within only a couple of degrees of separation from upwards of one-quarter of this list. Before and After Science, however, could be seen as an odd choice: Not formally groundbreaking, it’s frequently overlooked when discussing great albums from an era that’s romanticized as placing premiums on progression and innovation-and particularly in the context of Eno’s career, which is so full of both. After the gold rush of 1960s California rock, most of its main players spent the ’70s slowly hippie-twirling towards irrelevance and rehab resorts. Not so for Mr. Young, who was just hitting his stride as the decade turned over, kicking off a run of 11 great albums in 10 years with After the Gold Rush Physical Graffiti is not the hardest or most influential Zeppelin album. It’s not even their best. But it’s arguably the most essential.
