Gary Lewis & the Playboys were an American 1960s era pop and rock group, fronted by musician Gary Lewis, the son of comedian Jerry Lewis. They are best known for their 1965 Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "This Diamond Ring", which was the first of a string of hit singles they had in 1965 and 1966. The band had an earnest, boy-next-door image similar to British invasion contemporaries such as Herman's Hermits and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

The Playboys were one of those odd groups that bridged the gap between the pop music of the early 1950s and the rock & roll of the late 1950s. Their roots go back to 1951, when n Ray D'Agostino decided to form a band. With Phil Wing (later replaced by Lou Mauro) on drums, John Procopio (succeeded by Joe Franzosa) playing bass, Paul Coletti (succeeded by Irv Mellman) on piano, and D'Agostino (billed as Ray Dee), later joined by Ronnie James on guitar, and Sammy Vale as lead singer, they began working in the area around Philadelphia in the early 1950s.

Terry Dunavan's "Rockin' at School" is a nicely paced piece of teen fantasy, and Billy Adkinson's "Sugar Lump" is a surprisingly hard-edged number, considering its title. An outfit called the Shadows, having nothing to do with Hank B. Marvin and company, provides a free-wheeling, smoothly professional "Redwood Fence," sparked by a Chuck Berry-inspired guitar break
