When an album begins with a song called 'Risperdal', one would assume a ng 45 minutes or so are underway. And one wouldn't be wrong! Sure, Balf Quarry has moody space in it's soul, melodies whether stretched over Rock, ululating rhythm, chimes 'n piano and/or wah-wah. Regardless of the configuration, Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan are locked together, beating it out, listening to feeling the sound of their earth quake.

Balf Quarry sees the duo swaggering through louche wah-wahed blues, no-wave barn burners and salty pop ditties, culminating in an eerily beautiful, piano-haunted fever dream. 80. It hits just as furiously and sloppily as all the old Markers standards, no matter its label, run time, or production quality. Some very satisfying words in album titles this week, if you’ll forgive the fairly tangential way of starting a blog: Veckatimest, Bitte Orca, and today, Balf. Balf Quarry is the new album from the Magik Markers – according to the sleevenotes, A stone quarry in Hartford, CT which has mined traprock since the earliest days of the city. Anyway, I was just reading the stuff I wrote about Magik Markers’ Boss a couple of years ago (I’d call it their last album, but I suspect there may have been a few releases below my radar in the interim)
