Earth, Wind & Fire's return to Warner Bros. with 1993's Millennium proved to be short-lived - the album failed to meet the company's expectations commercially. Four years later, EWF ended up on the independent, Miami-based Pyramid label with the surprisingly retro In the Name of Love. More personnel changes had taken place, but thankfully, Maurice and Verdine White and Philip Bailey were still on board for what was EWF's most live-sounding, least high-tech offering since 1983's Powerlight. However, EWF had been touring without Maurice since 1994).

Of the dozen musicians who made up Earth, Wind & Fire and its horn section during the funk band's glory days in the '70s, only four appear on their 1997 album, In the Name of Love. On hand, however, are the three crucial figures-lead singers Philip Bailey and Maurice White, and bassist Verdine White. The music on both 'Avatar' & 'In The Name Of Love' is mostly catchy but never monumental like the EWF's classic era from the 1970's, but the group displays their sense of fun, and for a moment, they reverted to their past attempts to sound hip & street (the opening track 'Keep It Real' for example). Still, even with that song, EWF is to be commended for the solid tracks & great musicianship

A single from this album, I Think About Lovin’ You, provided EWF with their first Top 40 R&B hit. Also in 1971, the group performed the soundtrack to the Melvin Van Peebles film ‘Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song’. The radio-aired title track was released as a single under the name Ramsey Lewis and Earth, Wind & Fire. It went to number 20 R&B in early 1975. The Sun Goddess album went gold, hitting number 12 pop in early 1975. Maurice had also played on Lewis’ other high-charting album, Wade In The Water; the title track single peaked at number three R&B in the summer of 1966.
