Tōru Takemitsu (武満 徹 Takemitsu Tōru, October 8, 1930 – February 20, 1996) (pronounced ) was a Japanese composer and writer on aesthetics and music theory. Largely self-taught, Takemitsu possessed consummate skill in the subtle manipulation of instrumental and orchestral timbre. He is famed for combining elements of oriental and occidental philosophy to create a sound uniquely his own, and for fusing opposites together such as sound with silence and tradition with innovation.
The composer was especially drawn to the meaning of marginalia as "water" which he associates in this and several other works with the behavior of sound. Takemitsu is aiming primarily at vertical writing in this piece - single texture events or chords that like the "shakuhachi, arise vertically, like a tree" in contrast to the horizontal continuity (melodies, chord progressions and development) of most Western music, of "sounds which walk along the horizon" (Takemitsu).
Toru Takemitsu (193096) was the best known Japanese composer of his generation, bringing aspects of Eastern and Western traditions together, yet he remained something of an elusive gure. Takemitsus works are increasingly popular with Western audiences and Peter Burt attempts for the rst time to shed light on the hitherto rather secretive world of his working methods, as well as place him in context as heir to the rich tradition of Japanese composition in the twentieth century. p e t e r bu rt is Vice-Chairman of the Takemitsu Society.

After the war, Takemitsu took up work for the US Armed Forces before becoming very ill and bed ridden. Around this time, Takemitsu had also begun a career as a film composer, first conducting the score for Crazed Fruit by director Ko Nakahira in 1956. The composer produced work primarily for Shochiku until the early 1960's, when he branched out working with Toho and other studios on films such as Wonderful Bad Woman (1963).
