Built to Spill's live album, aside from its uninspired title, restores purpose and value in the format. Primarily because Built to Spill restore purpose and invention to the guitar. On their 1997 album, Perfect from Now On, Built to Spill's slave fingers stacked slabs of reverb and bricks of glitter-dipped notes into a Record of Babel under the whipping brilliance of Doug Martsch's mind. Keep It Like a Secret chopped up the anthemic architecture into more livable suburban models.

The first time I saw Built to Spill remains one of my fondest concert memories. It was my first show being legal age, and three friends and I, drunk off excitement and beer, planted ourselves front and center. For the rest of the evening it felt like the world consisted of just the four of us and the indie rock greats, that blissful noise blasting through those deafening speakers so close to our ears.

Built to Spill were formed in Boise, Idaho, in 1993, shortly after Martsch had departed the Boise-rooted, Seattle-based Treepeople. Martsch had grown up in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he formed his first band, Farm Days, with bassist Brett Nelson and drummer Andy Capps while in high school during the mid-'80s. In response to demand from fans, the Live album was culled from the supporting tour, featuring additional guitar work from Brett Netson and longtime band cohort Jim Roth; assembled from three different gigs by Ek, it was released in 2000. The proper studio follow-up to Keep It Like a Secret arrived with 2001's Ancient Melodies of the Future; critical responses ranged from enthusiasm to indifference. The following year, Martsch took a breather to release Now You Know, a solo album on which he delved into more traditional folk and blues.

Built to Spill are an American indie rock band based in Boise, Idaho, United States. The band has released eight full-length albums, and its most recent album, Untethered Moon, was released on April 21, 2015. Former Treepeople guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch formed Built to Spill in 1992 with Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz as the band's original members. In an interview with Spin, Martsch stated that he intended to change the band's lineup for every album, himself being the only permanent member. Live is Jake Shimabukuro's 2009 solo album. It was released in April 2009, and consists of live in-concert performances from various venues around the world, including New York, Chicago, Japan, and Hawaii. Live peaked at number 5 in Billboard's Top World Music Albums in 2009 and 2010.

Built To Spill did not tour as a band in 2002 although Doug Martsch performed numerous solo concerts in support of his solo album. From 2003 to 2005, Built To Spill toured extensively with over 150 live performances, playing new songs live as early as 2004. In 2004, the band confirmed rumors that they had recorded another studio album in Portland, OR, titled You In Reverse. The album was not released in 2005 due to difficulties associated with the use of a new recording facility, inefficiencies associated with self-producing the album and time constraints.
