I Refuse to Be Lonely is the ninth studio album by American Soul singer-songwriter Phyllis Hyman. It was released posthumously in November 1995, five months after the singer's death on June 30, 1995.
In November 1995, Hyman's posthumous album, I Refuse to Be Lonely, was released. Although the project had an overdrawn gestation, to combat the delay in its commercial release, Hyman had started performing the tracks "This Too Shall Pass" and "I Refuse to Be Lonely" in concert. The delay in the album's release adversely affected her both emotionally and financially and the delay was said to be cited over "cost negotiations". Songs were culled from various recording sessions from the mid-1980s into the early 1990s. Forever with You (1998) contains love songs, torch songs, bitter-sweet ballads, smooth jazz offerings and uptempo tracks, most of which showcase Hyman's' usual interpretation of heartbreak and strife. Hyman was quoted as saying that these songs were about "relationships gone bad!" Much of the material on this album was initially intended for her Living All Alone release.
It would be a lie to say I'm not afraid But to be afraid is something that I've always been The difference is this time I'm not giving in. Yes, I am alone, yes, I'm on my own But for the first time in my life I'm gonna carry on, yes, I'm gonna ache

I Refuse to Be Lonely, the 7th and final album and 3rd for Philadelphia International, was a personal, revealing amazing work of art. Each song contained a piece of Hyman's broken heart. All the songs touch on love, and the need and desire for love, the loss of love and the getting over of bad love. The opening title track brings a tear to your eye, while the whistling of Living All Alone returns to excite and send chills on Waiting For The Last Tear to Fall. My personal opinion: this is essential smooth soul music. Don't hesitate to purchase this.
