Nik Bärtsch's Ronin ‎– Awase. Label: ECM Records ‎– ECM 2603, ECM Records ‎– 673 5867. Series: Ritual Groove Music – 12. Format: CD, Album. Music By – Nik Bärtsch (tracks: 1, 2, 4 to 6), Sha (5) (tracks: 3). Photography By – Thomas Wunsch. Photography By – Reto Camenisch. Producer – Manfred Eicher. Recorded October 2017 Studios La Buissonne,. L'empire des signes by Roland Barthes (In French, English and German).

Awase sees the musician reconvening Ronin - the band that drew the attention of ECM's Manfred Eicher and released four stellar albums between 2006 and 2012 - after a six-year break. The lineup has been trimmed from a quintet to a quartet, consisting of veterans Sha on bass clarinet and alto saxophone, drummer Kaspar Rast, and newcomer Thomi Jordy on electric bass. Continuing to compose in his modular system where interlocking rhythms meet contrapuntal, minimal grooves that Bärtsch defines as "Zen funk," he delivers new works as well as expanded and revisioned takes on earlier.

Nik Bärtsch's Ronin: Awase by Mike Jurkovic, published on May 7, 2018.

Album · 2018 · 6 Songs. In martial arts, awase is about merging with the energy of one’s opponent. There’s something of that in the lissome, expansive acoustic jazz-funk of pianist Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin, on record here for the first time since Live in 2012. Bärtsch’s piano is bright and percussive alongside the ghostly reeds of Sha, the tight electric bass of Thomy Jordi, and the kinetic beats of drummer Kaspar Rast. The format is Moduls rather than songs, some unfolding over long durations, with dark melodies and intricately patterned, almost danceable cross-rhythms. Awase Nik Bärtsch's Ronin.

Nik Bärtsch's ensemble Ronin has an individualistic sound, consistent over many albums, based on minimalistic, staccato rhythmic and scalar patterns called (and numbered) Moduls, related to both modules and modes. Within each Modul there are musical modular forms that are flexible to the developing piece. For this opus, Bärtsch is at the piano, Sha blows bass clarinet and alto saxophone, Thomy Jordi plays bass, and Kaspar Rast handles the drums. Awase, the title of the album, meaning in Japanese 'coming together,' is a principle in Aikido martial art. The individual musician merges into the flow to shift its power and direction. Thus, despite their similarity, the Moduls remain interesting and mesmerizing through both subtle and distinct alterations. Ronin is a group you experience as well as hear. This album is among their best. 17 people found this helpful.

Modul 58 is so powerful. The groove is outstanding by the second part of that track. Love it.
