orient:occident - minimum:maximum. Hans Otte is best known for his piano music (mostly The Book of Sounds), but his more experimental works have yet to be disseminated at large. This Pogus release salvages two works composed in the '70s and recorded by Radio Bremen. They portray an artist profoundly influenced by John Cage's concepts yet exploring his very own forms. Performed simultaneously in Stockholm and Bremen (although the details of this are not revealed), "minimum:maximum" is "an environment for two organists.

While Hans Otte was an enthusiastic, one might say visionary promoter of fellow composers, such as John Cage and David Tudor, whose impacts had registered to the general public long after their force reached the surface, he nevertheless remained deeply committed to his own music. Recorded On October 27th, 1973. Orient : Occident (1977): for two woodwind-players and tape. Recorded on January 21st, 1986. There are no tracklisting associated with this item.

Orient:occident/ Minimum:maximum (Pogus, 2005) collects Minimum:maximum (1973) for voice and two organists, and Orient:occident (1977) for two woodwind-players and tape. The former is the main piece, at 41 minute. Its uneventful beginning is misleading, as eventually (12') the background sounds, in the form of a distorted harpsichord sonata, begin prevailing over the reciting voice, and this (15') degenerates into a videogame-like orgy of metallic noises. Then (23') the atmosphere regresses to sparse dissonant counterpoint to the voice till the final crescendo of distortions
