P5's prior albums had something of a ticky-tacky quality, but Bossa Nova 2001 burst forth as a fully realized masterpiece. An aside: The album was released in 1993, and the "2001" in the title was a reference to the retro-futurism of the 1960's. Pastiche blends seamlessly with an astute pop sensibility to create the "new stereophonic sound spectacular" that became the core of P5's sound  . The album's best song, the dreamy fantasia "Magic Carpet Ride," would become the final song ever performed live by Pizzicato Five, and no fan could have asked for a better selection.

Bossa Nova 2001 is the seventh studio album by Japanese pop band Pizzicato Five. It was released on June 1, 1993 by the Nippon Columbia imprint Triad. Following the house music-oriented Sweet Pizzicato Five the previous year, Bossa Nova 2001 signalled a return to the group's 1960s and 1970s-influenced pop style, mixed with elements of alternative dance.
