The Tölzer Knabenchor (Tölz Boys' Choir) is a German boys' choir founded in 1956 in the Bavarian town of Bad Tölz and, since 1970, based in Munich. The choir is ranked among the most versatile and sought-after boys' choirs in the world, and is still led by its founder and musical director Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden. In the realm of baroque music in particular, the "Tölzer" made a significant contribution to the change in musical (historically informed) performance practice.

Tilo Medek, originally Müller-Medek (22 January 1940 – 3 February 2006), was a German classical composer, musicologist and music publisher. He grew up in East Germany, but was inspired by the Darmstädter Ferienkurse. He composed radio plays and incidental music. This CPO album features Medek's First Cello Concerto (1978-1982); as well as Eine Stele (1976), dedicated to his friend Bernd Zimmermann; and Schattenspiele (1973), both for solo cello. All three works make exceptional technical and endurance demands on the cellist. The concerto almost pits the solo cello against the vast orchestra, at times even calling upon the orchestra to completely overtake the fledgling soloist.
