The JPJ Quartet Featuring Bud Johnson ‎– 1969-71. Label: Storyville ‎– STCD 8235. The last eight tracks appeared on the Montreux 1971 LP on the same label (MJR 8111). The booklet is self-titled The JPJ Quartet, while the jewel box spine reads The JPJ Quartet Featuring Bud Johnson, then the CD reads The JPJ Quartet 1969-71. I chose the latter option. Tracks 1-6 recorded approximately between 1969-1970. Tracks 7-14 recorded on June 20, 1971 at the International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland.

Tenor saxophonist Budd Johnson (who doubles on soprano sax on several tracks), an artist whose legacy has been overlooked since his death in 1984, is the leader of this compilation, which adds a previously unissued studio session to a 1971 Montreux performance on this CD. Welsh pianist Dill Jones, bassist Bill Pemberton, and drummer Oliver Jackson round out the group. Johnson contributed the spirited "Tag Along," a robust tenor feature, along with the mournful "Contrast in Blue," in which he plays a blistering soprano sax solo in a classic jazz setting

1969 - June 20, 1971. The JPJ Quartet Featuring Budd Johnson. This compilation marks one of the few recordings by this cooperative quartet, which featured saxophonist Budd Johnson, the Welsh pianist Dill Jones, bassist Bill Pemberton and drummer Oliver Jackson.

Woodrow Wilson "Buddy" Johnson (January 10, 1915 – February 9, 1977) was an American jump blues pianist and bandleader active from the 1930s through the 1960s. His songs were often performed by his sister Ella Johnson, most notably "Since I Fell for You", which became a jazz standard. Born in Darlington, South Carolina, Johnson took piano lessons as a child, and classical music remained one of his passions.
