DJ Rush - 97/99 Motherfuckin' Tracks flac album

Despite his very charismatic presence behind the decks and his overall atypical appearance, DJ Rush's production skills leave me very dissatisfied. I can barely count a fair fistful of Major Rush production that have impressed me throughout the years. In order to try and improve the average, I put on "97/99 Mutherfuckin' Tracks", which seems like a nice overview of the two year time span. Still, most of this double pack is the same old Rush formula, which ironically never gives me any rush. You know, playful melodies and sounds combined with his deviant, deep and funky vocals. I mean, I know people who go nuts for any given vocal segment here, but when I hear a question like "do you like bass? Like bass boom boom boom bass boom?" repetaing for two minutes, my mood is 6 feet below sea level. Or even better "...Why you don't love me no more? Why do I feel so much pain? I love you. Don't you understand? You mean everything to me. I'd do everything to bring you home..." - what the f**k? Sure there might be some latent personal and heart tearing reason for recording this, but not being aware of it, the vocals kill me. Track to track it's more of the same stuff. Unlike another one of Chicago's heroes, Green Velvet, Rush just cannot deliver as strong as he can. His lyrics are never as catchy, fun or even as thought provoking as those of mr. Velvet! Sure his DJ sets are better than those of Green Velvet any day of the week, in my opinion, but his productions leave a lot to desire for. Potential bangers are tarnished by pointless vocals, which would spoil my night out if I heard them in a club. Not to make it seem like it's all bad, this release has a few moments when it all comes together. Dave Clarke's take on Freaks On Hubbard is one of those instances; a funky and groovy bass line moves the dance floor in any way it pleases as Rush' voice smoothly claims "I'm a freak 'cause I'm nasty"! Works every damn time, excellent DJ tool, and that bass line is sure to give your body a proper work out. The last two tracks on the second disc are my favorites though. Happy stick is a less known Rush tune with this really bubbly and playful melodic sequence. A really positive and playful drive is carried out throughout, and this is such a cool track to just bust a smile to. At the opposite pole is Session, with a heavily crooked and distorted hook layed over a slamming drum kick, as DJ Rush's voice comes out with the word "session" every once in a while. Hard as it comes, on point and neck snapping - awesome tool as well. Overall, I am sure most people will find more to their liking here than I did, because, after all, this is not really my cup of tea. However, if you are a fan of DJ Rush, I suggest you give this one a try, many of his earlier numbers can be found here, and in addition to that, a fair chunk of this material can still be adequately used in DJ sets.
