The Magic City is an album by the American jazz musician Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra. Recorded in two sessions in 1965, the record was released on Ra's own Saturn label in 1966. The record was reissued by Impulse! in 1973, and on compact disc by Evidence in 1993. It is part of the Penguin Guide's Core Collection of recommendations. It is notable especially for the title track, on which "the Arkestra's range of feelings and sound is expressed in a design that's simply unprecedented in jazz
Sun Ra in Philadelphia. Photos by Val Wilmer. The thing about being an alien from outer space, sent to spread enlightenment and happiness through sound, is that some of the things you set out to do can’t be accomplished on Earth. Everything that’s possible’s been done by man, the composer, pianist, and bandleader Sun Ra told interviewer John Corbett in 1986. I have to deal with the impossible. The late Sun Ra enjoyed the paradox of accomplishing the impossible, a feat that extends to his very career path.
Great album, very atmospheric and deep, one of Sun Ra's finest works, especially the title track on the A-side which reminds of a modern, atonal chamber symphony, dominated by futuristic flute sounds and echoing feedback effects from a microphone getting hit by a finger; later the saxophones join in and mess it all up, maybe even a bit too chaotic at. the peak
If you already own the original El Saturn label LP by Sun Ra bearing this title, you will still desire a copy of this item from ESP-Disk for several reasons. It does in fact contain the initially issued live recordings Ra did featuring Black Harold Murray and Pharoah Sanders, but also includes 45 minutes of previously unreleased music, and is accurately annotated with the full and correct personnel listing, plus updated liner notes by Russ Musto. Famous material shows up like "The World Shadow" (it appears that "The Shadow World" was also a Ra title), ranging from cascading piano to dense, counterpointed free bop and chaotic discourse to ritual African drumming.
All compositions by Sun Ra except as indicated. Volume 1: "Enlightment" (Ra, Hobart Dotson) - 2:56. The Star Gazers" - 3:08. Shadow World"- 13:20. The Cosmic Explorer" - 19:45. Volume 2: "Friendly Galaxy Number 2" - 8:46. Spontaneous Simplicity" - 10:50. The World of the Lightening" - 5:54. Black Myth: The Shadows Took Shape/This Strange World/Journey Through the Outer Darkness" - 8:32.
After his explosive and historic recordings The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra Vol. IVol. II were first released in 1965 and 1966, modern music was never the same. This album is a treasure of the new freedom that jazz had discovered in the 1960s. Ra might never have wanted to call it that, however. His music had elements of serialism from Schoenberg, mighty leaps in time and the explorations in genre defying rhythmic pulses-and quite simply wholly new worlds of musical experiences that only Ra could hear. Ronnie Boykins' solo on "The Shadow World" is inspired and magical. The frenzied wails of the horns and the plaintive bleating of the trombones make this vintage Arkestra music prophetic as well. Ra's own extraordinary bebop romp on "Outer Space Ways Incorporated" is majestic, original and memorable.
