Kool and the Gang is the self-titled debut studio album by funk band Kool & the Gang. The album was released in January 1970, and charted on the Billboard R&B album chart at De-Lite Records – DE-2003: Dennis ". Thomas – alto saxophone, flute, percussion, vocals. Khalis Bayyan – tenor and soprano saxophones, alto flute, vocals. Robert "Spike" Mickens – trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals. Claydes Smith – guitars. Woody Sparrow – guitars. Ricky West – keyboards, piano, vocals.

Taylor's silky voice and several catchy arrangements, R&B fans regard their true glory days as the 1970s. The New Jersey-based ensemble patented a jazz-tinged funk approach keyed by Robert "Kool" Bell's basslines, red-hot horn lines, chunky keyboards and guitar riffs, and functional vocals. Although they seldom ventured beyond the R&B charts during this era, their music had far more bite than their later pop hits.

Charles Smith (guitar), Rick Westfield (keyboards), and Kool on bass, they had no problem getting audiences excited with big sound dynamics. These experiences served them well in the music business where survival, sustainability and success are needed. You know their earliest hits, "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging", their transition to disco and rebirthing with the addition of James "JT" Taylor in the late 70s who ushered in "Ladies Night.
