Joshua Paul Davis (born June 29, 1972), better known by his stage name DJ Shadow, is an American record producer and DJ. He first gained notice with the release of his highly acclaimed debut studio album, Endtroducing. He has a personal record collection of over 60,000 records.
DJ Shadow : The Outsider. Label: Universal Motown. After a spoken word intro, which sounds reasonably Shadow-ish in its own right, The Outsider kicks off with the soulful, cinematic This Time, which instantly propels the album into an exciting direction. Featuring sampled vocals from an unknown singer and a psychedelic, funky backdrop, it’s not a particularly difficult song to imagine tacked onto Shadow’s prior releases. Yet the song that follows, 3 Freaks, changes the game by adding vocodered choruses, crunky beats and two gremlin-voiced rappers, Turf Talk and Keak da Sneak

The Outsider is either a concept record about musical schizophrenia or a warehouse for 18 of the most idiosyncratic productions of DJ Shadow's career. And, to complicate matters, many of them are excellent.
DJ Shadow - The Outsider Looking from the outside in at DJ Shadow's third studio album ‘The Outsider’ is no simple task given how emphatically different its content and style is from previous releases ‘Endtroducin. and ‘The Private Press’ - both critically acclaimed by musicians and critics alike. The latter two albums made a massive mark in the world of trip-hop and revealed the heights that can be scaled when a master of sampling plies his trade

Exclusively for Prime members. The Outsider does follow along the same footsteps as Endtroducing but not even Shadow himself will top that mind altering album. The Outsider opens with a story. The story truly gave me goosebumps as I heard it for the first time. The Outsider is a character who could be a part of society today. With the political climate as it is, "The Outsider" would be a welcome person indeed. What follows is a series of songs that, for most artists, do not really belong together. This album could be called eclectic if you did not listen for the underlying message.
So yes, I bought the album, sheepishly stuffing into my bag all the while mentally obsessing with said object as if it was a time bomb waiting to lay waste to my expectations. However, the more I thought about it, the more rational Davis’ sudden progression as an artist seemed to me. A decade-plus of crafting a signature sound around record sampling and beat juggling is bound to get tiresome and personally hackneyed, even if it means overwhelming critical acclaim.
