This article uses Spanish naming customs: the first or paternal family name is Rodrigo and the second or maternal family name is Vidre. Excelentísimo Señor Don. Joaquín Rodrigo. 1st Marquis of the Gardens of Aranjuez. None of Rodrigo's works, however, achieved the popular and critical success of the Concierto de Aranjuez and the Fantasia para un gentilhombre. These two works are very often paired in recordings. Pajaros de primavera (1972; commissioned by Dr. Isao Takahashi, a promotor of classical guitar in Japan, for his wife Take Takahashi; first performed in 1972 at the hospital bedside of Take Takahashi in Japan, "interpreted by a guitarist friend," as she was dying of cancer-Christopher Parkening gave the first public performance, also in Japan).

Elogio de la Guitarra is particularly one of the main works of Joaquin Rodrigo, that truly had to deserve major attention from the great soloists of the guitar. He plays the piece with Dionysian pleasure, aristocratic vein and discrete sensuality. I would really to recommend the acquisition of this album. It contains the grace, the flaming splendor and the fire of the Spanish taste without mannerisms, poses or artifices. 2 people found this helpful.

Rodrigo: Guitar Music, Vol. 1. 2008. Joaquín Rodrigo wrote a good deal of guitar music - not surprising for a Spanish composer of the twentieth century, but what was somewhat surprising was that he did not play the guitar. His guitar pieces are not particularly idiomatic: they use sounds from Spanish vernacular traditions, but guitarists say they don't fit easily under the fingers and in fact are unusually difficult to play. They force the guitar to do interesting things. Sample the piece called "Bajando de la meseta" (Coming Down from the Mesa, track 9) from the Por los campos de España set, where the guitar evokes echoes bouncing off stone. It works, and it has the Spanish atmospherics Rodrigo is known for, but it's also quite unexpected.

Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez is one of the miraculous compositions of the 20th century. My library of recordings contains over a hundred versions, yet the work retains its freshness and spontaneity however many times I hear it. One of my most treasured possessions is a copy of the miniature score signed with a sweet inscription by the composer and dated April 6, 1993. Such criticism is like finding fault with the perfect action of a Swiss clock that has been keeping accurate time for half a century, or seeing imperfections in a painting by the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau. Of course, various mythologies have spun themselves around the creation of the Aranjuez-charming but highly questionable. One familiar fable, for example, is that Rodrigo and his wife Victoria de Kamhi spent their honeymoon in Aranjuez, Spain, and that was a large inspiration for the piece.
