Engelbert Humperdinck (German: ; 1 September 1854 – 27 September 1921) was a German composer, best known for his opera Hansel and Gretel. Humperdinck was born at Siegburg in the Rhine Province in 1854. After receiving piano lessons, he produced his first composition at the age of seven.

The cast is led by mezzo-soprano Katrin Wundsam as Hänsel and soprano Alexandra Steiner as Gretel, and their acting is appropriately innocent and joyful, while soprano Ricarda Merbeth as the Mother and bass-baritone Albert Dohmen as the Father convey their worries and fears of the dark woods.

Märchenspiel in drei Bildern. Humperdinck, Engelbert. I-Catalogue NumberI-Cat.

Humperdinck: Hänsel und Gretel. Popp's tart phrasing and legato are a pleasure as always. But the real reason to own this particular HANSEL UND GRETEL is for Christa Ludwig's gloriously sung and acted Witch. It's easy to see why. Usually assigned to character tenors in the opera house, most listeners are denied the pleasure of hearing a first class high mezzo in this part.
