Ella Sings Gershwin is a 1950 studio album by Ella Fitzgerald, accompanied by the pianist Ellis Larkins. Issued on DL5300 on the Decca label, this was Fitzgerald's first album. Originally on 10" vinyl, which preceded album releases on 12" vinyl, it featured eight tracks. The complete album was combined with Fitzgerald's 1954 album Songs in a Mellow Mood and re-issued on CD in 1994 by MCA Records on the GRP Jazz label under the title Pure Ella.

The Gershwin ballad material with Larkins is exquisite; Fitzgerald really digs into the lyrics, sometimes including rare verses, and Larkins provides thoughtful, alert jazz piano accompaniments. Although the frantic "Oh, Lady Be Good" is a jarring change of pace from the rest of the program, it features a spectacular episode of Fitzgerald's scatting.

In the 1950s, Ella Fitzgerald had her splendid multi-disc Gershwin Songbook with Nelson Riddle, which has become a classic in its own right. This earlier single LP is the one I still prefer. She's accompanied by the great Ellis Larkins and together make a sublime pair, easy, relaxed and infinitely mellow.

The resultant album, Ella Sings Gershwin is lovely and while they are very different in presentation to Ella’s later foray into the Great American Songbook they are both perfect vehicles for her. I never knew how good our songs were until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them. A new song book meant a new arranger and Granz finally got Nelson Riddle into the studio with Ella, something he had been looking to do since he she had arrived at Verve.
