Elliott cites authors like David Foster Wallace and Milorad Pavic as influences on the approach, as both write books that prevent the reader from progressing sequentially from page to page. So in the absence of linear development (or indeed very few melodies of any sort) the pieces rely on a wide variety of playing techniques to create distinctive textures

Elliott continues to eschew bass and drum solos, utilizing them only in compositionally specific sections of music. The album opens with the lilting Yellow House, a composition consisting of four distinct sections and a melody that recalls the hard bop era of the 1950s. The solo form of the composition alternates between the initial melody and an Afro-Cuban feel in a minor key. Stabinsky’s solo builds to a climax and dissolves the form before bassist Elliott restates the opening theme. Since the release of Mauch Chunk, all four members of the core quartet have released solo recordings including Moppa Elliott’s Still, Up In the Air, and pianist Ron Stabinsky’s Free For One, both on Hot Cup Records. In February 2017 MOPDtK the band released the septet album Loafer’s Hollow to wide critical acclaim.

Solo double-bass improvisations consisting of sequences of contrasting themes, or musical cubism in the spirit of Picasso and Braque. Genre: Avant Garde: Free Improvisation.

Harder on the Outside continues with Booberonic, a Beats by Balto!composition based around samples from Moppa Elliott’s solo bass album Still, Up in the Air (that poor Moppa has to recreate here, over and over). It’s a big time groovy number with an intricate, snaky back-and-forth between Murray on tenor and Wood on alto. And what a clean Jazz tone it is. Lundbom plays real pretty for the producer (ibid), bringing thoughtful, tasteful melodic construction to the otherwise rock- and hip-hop-infused session. Next up, Wood (on soprano) in duet with Elliott on the bass, gesturing playfully back-and-forth over Monaghan in pure solid pocket mode. Wood wins and the piece winds down as gently as it began. Fussing Blues is a cover, of sorts. Originally written in 1924 for tenor banjo by Frank Littig, Lundbom and Big Five Chord treat it as a great excuse for a 60’s-style Free Jazz Romp.

Notes

Moppa Elliott, bassist and leader of the jazz ensemble, "Mostly Other People Do the Killing" presents his first solo double-bass album. The pieces presented in this recording were recorded on February 16, 2015 at St. Stephen's Pro Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Each improvisation is a series of disparate musical ideas that transition rapidly in an attempt to disrupt the linear progression of thematic development.
