But the Who, thank God, made it on their own, and Decca, afraid of losing any of the golden eggs, has released this album in hope of keeping Pete Townshend and Co. in the public eye while the Who work on their Blind Deaf and Dumb Boy opera. Thus we’re presented with this random collection of tracks, some superb ( Magic Bus, Pictures of Lily and Disguises ), some good, (like Bucket-T ), some bad (John Entwistle’s cuts on this LP just don’t touch Whiskey Man or Boris ), and as a real drag, even three repeats from earlier albums. Magic Bus" is a song written by Pete Townshend during the time that My Generation was being recorded in 1965. However, it was not recorded by the Who until 1968 and released in the UK on 18 September 1968. It has become one of the band's most popular songs and has been a concert staple, although when released, the record only reached number 26 in the United Kingdom and number 25 in the United States.

This compilation uses the shorter mono version of the title track. Some Canadian CD reissues use the longer 4 minute plus stereo version (also the case on the Canadian version of the compilation album Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy). As was standard practice at the time this album was compiled, recycled B-sides to singles and other tracks were filler around the big current single.
