A version by Cy Grant with pianist Bill Le Sage – much jazzier than the original stage version – appeared on their 1965 album Cy & I. Anthony Newley's own recording appeared on his 1965 album "Who Can I Turn To" and other songs from "The Roar of the Greasepaint". One of the earliest recorded versions was a jazz treatment by saxophonist John. Recorded on 18 February 1965, it also features Art Davis, Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner. Versions were also released in 1965 by Nina Simone, Jean.

Bill Le Sage was part of the first wave of British bebop musicians to emerge in the late 1940s, and remained a lifelong devotee and highly skilled exponent of the form throughout a long and distinguished career. He was a founder member of the most famous British bebop band of its day, the Johnny Dankworth Seven.

b. William Le Sage, 20 January 1927, London, England, d. 31 October 2001, London, England. From the mid-40s onwards Le Sage was a popular figure on the London jazz scene, leading his own group and also building a long association with John Dankworth. Le Sage grew up in a musical family, learning to play the ukulele, piano and drums. He formed his own sextet in 1945, but a period of national service with the Royal Signals saw him playing in army bands for three years.
