Ernest Ansermet conducts L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande for Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, A Night On the Bare Mountain, and Khovanschina - Prelude. The reissue of classical music masterpieces by Esoteric has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using Hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) technology to improve sound quality. This series marks the first Hybrid SACD release of historical recording selections that have been mainstays of the catalog since their initial release

While this disc headlines Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Night on Bald Mountain," the jewel here is buried in the last track in the program: Balakirev's extraordinary tone poem, "Tamara. Tamara was based on a ballad by Lermontov, who was himself inspired by an ancient legend he encountered while exiled to the Caucasus. As could usually be expected from Ernest Ansermet with the Suisse Romande orchestra, the sound is fine, the conception insightful, and the pacing excellent - an excellent disc, recommended without reservation for those who are not trying to run a 40-yard dash through the Pictures at an Exhibition. The other pieces on the disc receive equally sure-handed performances: this disc belongs in the library of every honest classical music lover, it's that good!!!

At the time of its release – 1960 – Ansermet’s stereo recording of the Mussorgsky-Ravel ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ was demonstration worthy, and it still, today, retains its sense of space and impact. Much of the remainder of the program makes its first international appearance on CD, and the ‘Dance of the Persian Slaves’ (from Khovanshchina) and the little ‘Gopak’ from ‘Sorochintsy Fair’ will be especially sought after by collectors. The CD of Mussorgsky orchestrations is filled-out with a comparative rarity – Balakirev’s haunting symphonic poem ‘Tamara’, a temptress who seduces and murders. MILI BALAKIREV Tamara – Symphonic Poem. L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande Ernest Ansermet. RECORDING INFORMATION.
