Composed By, Conductor – Dmitry Kabalevsky. Orchestra – Russian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Sent right down the middle of the alley, Dmitry Kabalevsky's piano concertos are bound to strike a familiar note to fans of early twentieth century Russian music. Composed in 1928 and 1935, Kabalevsky's piano concertos are tuneful, colorful, vivacious, and altogether charming.

The performances by In-Ju Bang of the First and Second Piano Concertos are superb, and she is ably supported by the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. The better recording of the Second concerto, however, is the Chandos recording played by Kathryn Stott. This first is the more lyrical of two concertos with the second far more sardonic and dissonant. The middle movement of the second is a dark funeral march set in a series of variation that comes very close to sounding like Shostakovich. Both concertos are engaging works that show that Kabalevsky was an excellent composer of the concerto form.

Unfortunately, while Bang is a fine young pianist with a light touch and a nimble technique, Yablonsky is a more than capable conductor, and the Russian Philharmonic is a more than competent Moscow studio orchestra, their only competition outgunned them by including more of Kabalevsky's music on much longer discs.

Kabalevsky: Piano concertos Nos. 1 & 2/Bang. Artistic Quality: 8. Sound Quality: 8. Dimitri Kabalevsky’s First Piano Concerto owes a heck of a lot to Prokofiev’s Second–so much so that at times you might think you are listening to that work. But Prokofiev is more formally imaginative, edgier, and more melodically distinctive, and that explains why this Kabalevsky work isn’t well known. Every movement goes on a couple of minutes longer than it should–but that said, it’s still very listenable and often quite appealing  . Yablonsky, Dmitry (conductor).
