Metallica had an enormous impact on 80s metal and their first five albums are all classics of the genre (Yes, I’m including the Black Album as a classic). However, their material afterwards became mixed at best. I’m on record as saying that Load/Reload aren’t all bad by any means (there’s a very strong single album that can be made out of the two) but it’s pretty clear that Metallica lost a lot of their creative mojo. St. Anger was absolute trash. Death Magnetic was mediocre. Iron Maiden’s some song are also hallucinating, if you’re high its better to listen to them. Who has better songs? It would be cruel to take sides though my personal favourite is Iron Maiden but i also love Metallica. I wasn’t born in that generation to answer it perfectly, im just a teenager who diverted from the modern pop culture and edm’s.

The discography of Metallica includes 10 studio albums, four live albums, three extended plays, 39 singles, 10 video albums, 41 music videos, one soundtrack album, one collaboration album, and three box sets. They are a San Francisco-based metal band formed in 1981 by James Hetfield (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums). After several bassist and lead guitarist changes (including Dave Mustaine), the band settled on Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett, respectively.

Kill 'Em All is the debut studio album by the American heavy metal band Metallica, released on July 25, 1983, by the independent record label Megaforce Records. Kill 'Em All is regarded as a groundbreaking album for thrash metal because of its precise musicianship, which fuses new wave of British heavy metal riffs with hardcore punk tempos.

Iron Maiden for me is living off their first three records. Have they made good songs since then? Yeah, but they haven't made great records. I like to think we're still making great records and as much as people come out wanting to hear 'Reign In Blood' and 'Angel Of Death', they also want to hear 'Disciple' or even 'Implode. I can't imagine somebody going to a Slayer show and thinking "man I really hope they pull out 'Implode  . Slayer's 2015 release Repentless sold 49,000 copies its first week, which was an improvement over their previous release, World Painted Blood, at 41,000 copies first week, but down for the 62,000 copies that Christ Illusion sold in its first week in 2006.

In terms of metal, bands like Metallica & Slayer are very famous & therefore almost certainly mainstream because they sell millions of albums worldwide OR because they were the 'firsts' or 'greats' of the particular sub genre (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden). Even non metal heads probably know who they are. Those people are generalizing when they say mainstream metal is horrible. But there is some of the more recent metal that you find on MTV that is quite terrible (new Metallica, Black Tide & Slipknot are some).
