Deer Tick is an American alternative rock band from Providence, Rhode Island composed of singer-songwriter John J. McCauley, guitarist Ian O'Neil, bassist Chris Ryan and drummer Dennis Ryan. The band's music has been described as rock with folk, blues and country influences, although the band actively rebels against the country tag, stating "We’re proud not to sing with a twang".
Deer Tick tries the same thing with Deer Tick, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. The first disc focuses on the band's more acoustic and rootsy side (with some warm psychedelic effects woven in for texture) while the latter boasts the ragged garage rock most often heard in their live performances. What unites them is that they were cut at Memphis' famed Ardent Studios, where both consistency and immediacy, experimentation and rough-hewn magic, are all part of its justified reputation as a revered locale
Unpretentious and unpolished, Deer Tick continue to confront the rigours of life with unapologetic candidness on both volumes here. While Vol. 1 feels like a companion to Negativity, its best moments utilize healthy irony rather than mere self-confession and elevates it - in spite of its missteps - as a result.

With their latest project, Deer Tick Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, the gritty Americana darlings have molded a double barrel shotgun that compartmentalizes both sectors of the band’s musical aspirations: that of a familial front porch acoustic folk rock jam session (Vol. 1) and that of a gnarled, unapologetic East Coast dive bar act (Vol. 2). The result is a statement of purpose. In the four years since the band’s last album was released, John J. McCauley has cleaned up and become.

Partisan Records, Knitting Factory Records. Every song on this album is catchy and continues to fascinate long-term. There's a variety to the songs and moods they capture, and the various solos - piano, sax, etc. - really fit well where they are placed. Rarely does a record strike me so quickly and stick with me as this one has. Get it now! I far prefer Vol 1 (this one) to Vol 2. Reply Notify me Helpful. referencing Vol. 1, LP, Red, PTKF 2150-1. An excellent record with a middling quality vinyl pressing. Mostly the shortcomings of the pressing do not interfere with enjoyment.
