The album provides a good sampling of Arriaga's surviving orchestral works; many of the most intriguing, such as the opera Los esclavos felices (The Happy Slaves), have been lost. Three String Quartets are generally thought to be his best, and you don't get those, but the substantial Overture in D major, Op. 20, as well as the French vocal cantatas Herminie and Médée, given brisk performances by soprano Berit Norbakken Solset, are not commonly played and certainly will hold your attention.

Overture to 'Los esclavos felices' (1819, revised . 821). Tonally ambiguous, the D minor Symphonie à grand orchestre, which begins and ends in D major, and the Overture, Op. 20, in D major, which was written ‘without having learnt the principles of harmony’, are proof that the death of Arriaga at age nineteen was a ‘sad loss to Basque music’. Juan Crisostomo Arriaga, who died in 1806 on the eve of his 20th birthday, left a handful of works that proclaim a lost genius. There have been a number of recordings of his Symphony in D and the opera overture, Los Esclavos Felices, yet this new bargain disc from the Algarve Orchestra brings a welcome alternative, generously coupled with a group of Portuguese works that are even rarer and equally delightful
