André Jolivet wrote his first Flute Concerto in 1949. It is scored for solo flute and strings and was premièred on 24 January 1950 by soloist Jean-Pierre Rampal. The work lasts about 13 minutes. It is now part of the standard flute repertoire and several prominent flautists have recorded it. Jolivet associated the sound of the flute with "the breath of life" and was particularly fascinated by its "primitive" connotations.

Jean-Pierre Louis Rampal (7 January 1922 – 20 May 2000) was a French flautist.

Recording is clear and play is spectacular. Flute lovers will definitely want this in their collection. 4 people found this helpful. I am typically not a fan of Jean Pierre's flute playing (I find his tone to be thin and his technical passages to be a bit sloppy). With that said I was very surprised to actually like this CD. This collection is full of great pieces. I also adore the last movement of the Ibert concerto. The sonatas in this collection are also great and very well known pieces. This CD collection is a bargain.

A flute concerto is a concerto for solo flute and instrumental ensemble, customarily the orchestra. Such works have been written from the Baroque period, when the solo concerto form was first developed, up through the present day. Some major composers have contributed to the flute concerto repertoire, with the best known works including those by Mozart and Vivaldi. Traditionally a three-movement work, the modern-day flute concerto has occasionally been structured in four or more movements.

Jean-Pierre Louis Rampal (7 January 1922 – 20 May 2000) was a French flautist. 1 Biography Post-war success. In 1945, following the liberation of Paris, Rampal was invited by the composer Henri Tomasi-then conductor of the Orchestre National de France-to perform the demanding Flute Concerto by Jacques Ibert, written for Marcel Moyse in 1934, live on French National Radio.
