Cy Coleman (born Seymour Kaufman; June 14, 1929 – November 18, 2004) was an American composer, songwriter, and jazz pianist. Coleman was born Seymour Kaufman on June 14, 1929, in New York City to Eastern European Jewish parents, and was raised in the Bronx. His mother, Ida (née Prizent) was an apartment landlady and his father was a brickmason. He was a child prodigy who gave piano recitals at venues such as Steinway Hall, the Town Hall, and Carnegie Hall between the ages of six and nine.

The 1989 Broadway musical City of Angels, with a book by veteran comedy writer Larry Gelbart and songs by another veteran, composer Cy Coleman, and first-time lyricist David Zippel, is a send-up of hard-boiled detective fiction and the Hollywood movies that were made from it in the 1940s, the main characters being Stone (James Naughton), the detective in a. Sam Spade/Philip Marlowe mold, and Stine (Gregg Edelman), the novelist in a Dashiell Hammett/Raymond Chandler mold, both of them (and everyone else) wisecracking a mile a minute

David Zippel's wry lyrics and Cy Coleman's beautiful jazz are a potent combination. This album is decidedly different from the OBCR, in that it tries to represent the whole show, and not just be a showcase for the songs (which is okay, because I still love the OBCR). It includes wonderful moments of stinging, witty Gelbart dialogue (as on the ". Blues" track, and the "It Needs Work" track).

The London cast recording of Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City Of Angels is a virtual carbon copy of the Broadway cast album, although since that one has a slightly more distinctive cast, it gets the edge. 1. Prologue - Overture. Cy Coleman, David Zippel. Original London Cast.

Directed by Bruce Guthrie Choreography by Lee Proud Book by Larry Gelbart Music by Cy Coleman Lyrics by David Zippel. A musical comedy weaving together two plots of the ‘real’ world of a writer trying to turn his book into a screenplay and the ‘reel’ world of the fictional film. The musical pays homage to the film noir genre of motion pictures that rose to prominence in the 1940s. By arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York. Cabaret events in the intimate setting of the Academy's newest recital hall follow performances of City of Angels.
